WHO AM I?
My name is Liv Buli. I write (mostly) data-driven stories. This year, my husband and I left our full-time gigs in order to spend some time traveling and exploring the world with our one-year-old daughter, while we figure out what's next. Beyond my day to day as a data journalist, I have written children's books about data visualization (can you say nerd), authored a graduate -level course on data analytics for the music industry, and led cross-functional teams to build and launch successful editorial properties.
WHAT DO I KNOW HOW TO DO?
I learned like crazy in the five years I spent at Next Big Sound and Pandora, working with an awesome team of data scientists, designers, and engineers that really challenged me. I brought my journalism background to the table, started building a consistent flow of articles and audience, and taught myself how to run numbers and write code. Music is a quirky and awesome beat, and I get a kick out of juxtaposing art and numbers.
I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world talking about what I do – from Brisbane, to Chile, to NYU classrooms. Since I love talking (my mom always says I should have been a lawyer or a politician) I am always happy to give my two cents. I have had the pleasure of being invited to speak and participate in panels and keynotes at SXSW, CMJ, Music Biz, Future of Music Policy Summit, SF Music Tech, BigSound, ByLarm and more.
Lately I am starting to think more and more about how to visualize data in simple, elegant ways to build better stories. In my mind, the best data journalism strikes a balance between finding (data science), showing (data visualization), and telling (journalism) a story.
WHY DOES IT MAKE ME HAPPY?
My dad once told me 'If you're not curious, you might as well be dead.'
I happen to think he's right.
The Coolest Thing I have ever done?
I'm pretty sure it's this project:
